Should we protect the environment now so future generations will not have to suffer from our lack of action?
If yes, please explain your response
If not, what other ethical or moral factors should convince humans to immediately act on climate change?
The current generation should act now to prevent climate change from impacting future generations. The longer we wait to make changes, the worse the impacts of climate change will be. It is not fair that future generations would be left a problem that they did not create. If we begin to invest in solar and wind energy now, a relatively simple and beneficial fix, then those technologies will have been established for future generations. Since we are aware of the problem and can begin to fix it, it would not be morally sound to ignore the issue. We should do what we can to alleviate the pains and problems it will cause future generations. There is also a chance that if we do not begin to make changes now, then the effects will be irreversible and generations to come will be living on a completely different earth.
ReplyDeleteClimate change is something that will definitely affect future generations but it is up to us as the current generation to decide just how much of an effect it will have. Personally, I believe that we should act on climate change problems as soon as possible. However, if there are more immediate problems which could cause problems now rather than later, we should focus on those first. This means that before we focus heavily on fixing climate change, we need to make sure our economy, foreign relations, and other important issues are all in relatively good shape. At least good enough that we can turn to a different direction without having them all fall apart while we aren't looking. So while climate change is important to address as soon as we can, it shouldn't be our primary focus right now.
ReplyDeleteIt is our responsibility to address climate change now before it is too late. Our actions now decide what the future of humanity is. For so long in this country and across the world, environmental issues have been viewed as problems for "later." Once ________ issues (economic, civil rights, etc.) are fixed, we'll have the luxury of dealing with the environment. We are at the point when we can no longer afford to push off environmental issues unless we want to kill or harm the lives of millions. We are already suffering from the consequences of not acting on climate change sooner, so if we don't starting changing the "deal with it later" mindset, nothing will ever be done and the human race will suffer much harsher consequences.

ReplyDeleteI believe it is the responsibility of the current population to try and protect the environment because it would be morally wrong to leave climate problems to those who did not contribute to creating them. All of the past generations were not cautious enough about how their behavior affected the planet. This caused the living generations to have to go to extreme lengths in order to invent environmentally friendly mechanisms that can achieve the same efficiency. If we agree to commit to environmentally friendly technologies, such as solar power, the Earth will begin to improve, and the future generations will not have to handle as many problems. Therefore, I believe it is our generation’s duty to do all we can in order to reduce climate change. Furthermore, the longer we let these problems continue, the worse they will become.
ReplyDeleteI believe we should protect the environment now so future generations will not have to suffer from our lack of action because as time passes, the more our resources will become depleted, thus causing challenges for the future generation. By protecting the biodiversity of our planet, we are protecting the variety of plants, animals, and other living things around the world. We are protecting the basic necessities of that we need to survive and taking that away will only kill our future children and their children. President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “But there must be the look ahead, there must be a realization of the fact that to waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed.” The greater the diversity of life, the greater the opportunities we have for our present generation and future generation.
ReplyDeleteI see no issue using our resources now to protect those generations to come. We have seen, through our own experiences, what happens when older generations do not feel the need to protect the environment. We are stuck cleaning up their mess. Hopefully with an increase in technology, knowledge and moral responsibility we will be able to go about this. We are seeing the effects of our grandparents and great grandparents refusing to think about our future through "Chasing Ice" and the common hour talk by Joe Santore. Our environment is dying and it is our fault. Maybe not directly our's, but it is the fault of the human population, and we should feel morally responsible for that. The only way to repay this great debt we owe to our Earth is through conserving what is left and preserving it for future generations to see.
ReplyDeleteWe should help our planet right now. Already people in our generation are suffering due to climate change that has been advanced by human involvement. Although the future is important change need to start now, not later. We should also put in place programs that help the future generations, even if we do not see the results ourselves. A combination of future and current efforts are needed to make this world a better place to live.
ReplyDeleteProspectively, I believe that we should utilize our resources to protect the environment now. We should do this because future generations will rely more actively upon technology than our current generation, meaning that more CO2 may be emitted into the atmosphere. Our environment is already being negatively affected by climate change. Therefore, our generation should take the initiative to be sure that in the future, the environment will not deplete from a lack of action. If the Paris Accord goes into affect, it will (should) permanently secure the environment's protection.
ReplyDeleteWe should definitely start helping our planet immediately. If we wait any longer, there will be even less hope for our world. There is a lot future generations already have to deal with and with climate change worsening within our generations time, it is unimaginable what else could happen for the future generations to clean up. While some people might not care what the future generations have to do, those people will be my family in the future and if there is something I can do to help them, I will. There is no point in waiting, we must start taking action to help our planet right now and make this Earth the best place possible, since it's all we have right now.
ReplyDeleteI believe our generation should protect the environment now so that future generations have a healthy planet to live on. Even though in the past, people have not taken extreme measures to stop climate change, they did not have access to the technology we have now, so there was no way they could have targeted the direct producers of global warming. Our generation today is responsible for keeping earth healthy because we are aware of the issues and have the means to stop it. Leaving the problem to future generations is wrong and could have effects on the environment that are irreversible.
ReplyDeleteI think there should be some actions taken now to ensure a better future. It is becoming more possible to make changes to our lifestyles with increasing technology. In the past, it has been more difficult to pursue immediate action becasue of a lack of knowledge and resources. However, we now know what changes need to be made and how to make these changes. Every ounce of effort will have some sort of impact down the road. Hopefully, enough can be done so that future generations have a healthy planet for years to come.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that there is any logical reasoning as to why we should wait to begin protecting our environment. First of all, waiting longer can only increase the chances of this problem becoming irreversible, and then it doesn't matter if the future generations will decide to act, it won't matter. As well, this problem isn't going to just affect future generations, it is already having adverse effects on the planet right now as we have seen in videos, like Chasing Ice. The last thing is to understand that the generation that this could become a deadly problem for is our own kids and grandkids, and to really think about what we could be leaving them to deal with. Change needs to happen, no reasoning can be used to make it okay.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should protect the environment now to avoid the injurious impact of our misuse of the earth for future generations. Realistically, we are largely responsible for a lot of what is going to happen in the years to come. If we bring in a new generation, we must take responsibility for the environment we're welcoming them into . Also, a lot of what we have done will become increasingly irreversible if we don't alleviate some of its damages with urgency. We must account for the fact that if we start making changes now , we would also enjoy the benefits of it. This isn't purely for the future, but a huge aspect of if is how our footprint will be perceived after we are gone and how can we decrease that footprint . We can make this less deadly than it is now but not doing anything at all sets us back. We can't necessarily afford to be set back more than we already have been with the new president-elect.
ReplyDeleteWe absolutely should protect the environment now so future generations will not have to suffer from our lack of action. If there is the possibility to prevent a problem why in the world would one not? Especially when it is as important as the environment, something that affects our health and the place we live. Furthermore, the future is uncertain, one does not know what other problems or circumstances we will be dealing with then. We are currently at a place in time where the technology is available and we know the problem. Therefore, if we do not protect the environment, future generations will blame our generation for its destruction. Lastly, there is the possibility that some changes to the environment will be irreversible, hence, there is no better time to act than now.
ReplyDeleteThe current generation needs to take immediate action in order to change the direction in which the climate is heading. Climate change effects everyone unilaterally, and changes everyone's lives whether you believe it is a myth or not. It is easy to make the argument in terms of a moral or ethical sense on why climate change is bad, but the biggest argument that needs to be made is how you can make the issue seem prevalent enough to perpetrate through human nature. It is incredibly hard to convince people to change their habits, or methodology of thought or belief. Instead of forcing a belief or mindset onto others, we should instead work to shift cultural norms to easier things that also effect the environment, like recycling, and using electric cars. Once green products become the norm, then it wont matter whether you believe in climate change existing as you will be changing the planet in a positive way anyways.
ReplyDeleteProtecting the environment now is vital for the well being of our planet. We cannot keep putting off our human responsibility to improve the environment. Past generations were very careless toward the environment, but this does not mean that we have to follow their lead of carelessness just because they exhibited it. We need to be pioneers in the recognition of environmental issues such as climate change and then find efficient ways to decrease the problem. There needs to be some form of compromise between the higher-ups of this nation in order to balance business and environmentalism. Environmentally friendly technology such as wind and solar have been created to avoid the problems that are already occurring throughout our planet and they need to be utilized more to reap their benefits. Not only are these decisions for the benefit of us, but for our children and grandchildren. If we get the ball rolling on this issue, generations will follow our lead.
ReplyDeleteYes, we should definitely protect our environment now so future generations will not have to suffer from our lack of action. The more we do now to improve our earth, it will be extremely beneficial to those in the future. If today's generations do not act upon climate change soon, our world will not be healthy in the future. Based off of the research in class, I have learned that climate change has an impact on everyone and the effects of global warming has been increasing. We have a decent amount of information to start the movement towards a healthier planet. However, the people need to be on board with what needs to happen in order for there to be change. If everyone is on track to getting a better planet, then it will be much easier for the future generations to continue to the movement.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that it is important that we protect our now for future generations. Our current generation is responsible for an exorbitant amount of green house gas emissions: an amount that is by no means sustainable nor necessary. By making inevitable lifestyle changes now, we will be ensuring that generations to come will have a healthy planet that is able to sustain life. Furthermore, at this point, we do not really know the effects that climate change will have on our planet in the long run. For one, this means we will not know if we have hit the point of no return until it is too late. In addition, I myself am of the opinion that it is better to be safe than sorry. I would rather we, as a nation and even as the world, make changes now and find out that they were unnecessary then not change and neglect our environment, only to later find out that what we have done is truly devastating and irreversible.
ReplyDeleteI believe it is important to use the resources we have at our disposal to try o protect future changes from the harms that climate change can produce. It would take sacrifices to our lifestyles now to accomplish the goal of preventing climate change from harming our future generations. However, I think that is necessary to not harm the economic status of the country in the short term, for long term advances in fighting climate change. It is necessary to take care of people who are struggling financially right now. It would also be important to make sure that all countries that contribute to the problem are participating in an agreement and not just a few to ensure that the problem actually gets solved.
