Please describe the significance of the 2016 Paris Accord.

How can this International Paris Accord be enforced?

What are the global consequences if the United States refuses to implement the plan set forth by the Paris Accord?

  1. The 2016 Paris Accord is the world's first climate agreement. The way that this agreement could be enforced would be from the states themselves. The Paris Accord is a bottom up structure meaning that the states must enforce the ideals that are set. There does not seem to be many consequences if a country decides to not implement the accord. It is mostly left up to the countries themselves to make sure their government is performing well. However, thinking critically, if a country such as the United States refused to implement these sanctions then other smaller countries would probably start caring less and less and eventually no change will be made. So, the global consequences would be a lack in change because of larger powers refusing to comply.

  2. The 2016 Paris Accord is the most progressive global effort to address climate change. Its goal is to keep global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Paris Accord is supposed to be enforced by the states themselves, and there is no international force that will hold countries accountable. If the U.S. does not implement the plan set forth by the Paris Accord, as President-elect Trump has claimed he will not, a number of consequences will ensue. Most obviously, climate change will not slow down because Trump intends to increase CO2 output, not reduce, and he has plans to take away environmental regulations. The unwillingness of the U.S. to follow the plans outlined by the Paris Accord will also deincentivize other countries from following their plans as well. If the U.S. is one of the main contributors to climate change and refuses to work at solving the problem, smaller countries who make less of an impact will not feel as responsible in upholding their own promises.

  3. The 2016 Paris Accord is a global unification to address the issue of climate change. 193 members of the UNFCCC signed the treaty and 109 countries have ratified the treaty. It is known as an ambitious plan that would attempt to hold an increase in global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius. New financial flows and new technologies will help countries adhere to the guidelines in the plan. Each individual state must enforce the plan on their own and there are few consequences for countries who do not hold up their part of the deal. As a global power, if the United States did not abide by the rules set forth in the Paris Accord, it would disincentivie other nations from partaking in the treaty. The United States is a heavy contributor to CO2 emissions, so if the United States did not follow the treaty, it would have a greater effect than a smaller country that releases less CO2 emissions.

  5. The Paris Agreements are the first major international agreement to address the pressing issues of climate change. It is the first time that a climate agreement has been legally binding, and set out specific goals to decrease the effects of climate change. The accords set legally binding standards, to keep temperature from increasing more than 2 degrees Celsius. The accord can be enforced, by the international community. The global consequences of the United States not following the accord is that we would be in violation of international law if we do not follow the accords.

  6. The Paris Accord is significant because it is a large international agreement that addresses climate change. The plan does not have a strong enforcement aspect, it is on the states to enforce the accord themselves. If the US does not enforce the Paris Accord then their contributions to climate change will not decrease. Since the US is such a major contributor of carbon dioxide emissions, it will undermine the plan. Smaller countries follow the example of larger countries so if countries like Russia and the United States do not make serious changes then the Paris Accord will not be an effective agreement.

  7. The 2016 Paris Accord is significant because it is the first attempt to bring nations together for the common cause of stoping global temperature change. The Paris Accord is dependent on the moral obligations of these governments and the pressure from other governments to check one another. The Accord needs to be enforced inside the nation itself. The invidual country need to attempt to hold themselves accountable and try to conduct change with in itself. If everyone does their job we will begin to see change. The United States is a world power and a big producer of CO2 emissions. If the U.S refuse to implement the plan, we would be setting a bad example for other countries. By refusing, the U.S would also not help in the efforts to end climate change.

  10. The Paris Accord is extremely significant because it is the world’s first climate agreement. This agreement binds various countries together to attempt to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Under the Paris Accord, each country is responsible for limiting their greenhouse gas emissions. Because there is not an international force responsible for making sure each country is abiding by the agreed upon rules, it might be hard for this agreement to be enforced. However because these countries signed this agreement they are clearly willing to try and decrease their greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, if the United States refuses to implement the plan set forth by the Paris Accord, our emissions will not decrease, and as a leading nation, we will set a horrible precedent for smaller countries.

  11. The Paris Accord is so vital because it is the first international legally binding climate deal and is aimed at preventing the rise of the global temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius. First of all, the governments have agreed to uni every 5 years in order to work on further developments and stricter laws. Between these 5 years, each country is expected to maintain and enforce the laws on their own. The progress of each country is expected to track the progress that it makes in order to follow the changes in the climate. The United States is an extremely country and also emits a large amount of emissions. Therefore, if the US decides to not follow the Paris Accord, the environment will not improve due to the fact that one of the largest countries is not working at improving it. Secondly, if other countries do not think the US thinks it is important then they might not follow the Paris Accord as they would be following in the footsteps of the US. As a leader on this planet, it is essential that the US takes the Paris Accord seriously and works to improve the environment not just for the sake of our country but for the sake of the whole world.

  12. The Paris Accord is an international agreement to help stop climate change. The Paris Accord maps out three specific points that will help control climate change. They want to control the change in temperature and start to develop new technology to reduce CO2 emissions. These limits are being enforced by the International global warming community. The consequences of the US not following the requirements is that global warming will only get worse and the environment will suffer. Also other countries will see use not following the rules and think that they don't have to either.

  13. The 2016 Paris Accord is a significant step into combating climate change. It is an international treaty, signed by various countries both developed and developing, that aims to keep the rise of temperature under 2 degree Celsius during this century. There is not much to hold nations accountable for not adhering to the accord. There would be drastic consequences in the U.S. refuses to implement the plan. As one of the largest contributors to CO2 emissions it would be difficult to achieve the goals of the accord while the U.S. is still contributing so much pollution. Furthermore, being a large and influential country in the world many countries may follow the U.S. if it decided not to follow the plan.

  14. The Paris Accord, the first worldwide climate agreement, has the intention of limiting global warming well below 2°C. In order to enforce the agreement, the government agreed to come together every five years to selectively adjust the target degree in which they wish to achieve. In doing so, the government is able to keep track of long-term progress so that they can decrease the likelihood of global warming. The Paris Accord has no international force guiding the environmental protection, therefore the states are given the freedom to improve upon their own efforts in order to reduce CO2 emissions. With limited consequences in response to not abiding by the agreement, it will be extremely difficult to enforce. If the United States refuses to implement the plan, they will be offsetting the likelihood that any other country would abide by the Paris Accord. Since the US is such a large contributor to the emissions of Carbon Dioxide, the environment would have no overall effect or change. The other countries will not follow the agreement if the US refuses it, because they are influenced by the actions of the US.

  15. The Paris Accord aims to do quit a few things in combating climate change. For instance, it aims to maintain increase in global average temperature to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, limit the increase to 1.5°C, and undertake rapid reduction of emission nation-wide. In order to achieve these things, nations have agreed to come together every 5 years to set targets,
and report to each other and the public on how well they are doing which pushes transparency as a means of gaining public trust. If we as a nation refuse to sign this accord we are going to be set back in time for the fight against climate change. If we refuse to take action through this accord, there is no stronger alternative to climate change on a domestic level, especially considering the most recent political shift. Our current president-elect stated that climate change is a Chinese hoax, failing to acknowledge climate change as existence or even worthy of national engagement. This could be potentially injurious, considering that his words imply he will do very little to combat climate change in his presidency. If the United States doesn't decide to follow the plan, there will be domestic and international uproar, and we will land farther back than other countries in potentially proposing a probable plan for combating climate change.

  16. The 2016 Paris accord is significant because it is the first that all the nations are coming together to combat global climate change and to adapt to the current changes while supporting the underdeveloped countries in the process. If this is a success, then it will be a major victory for the Earth and its citizens by lower the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The Paris Accord does not have a central entity that enforces the NDCs (nationally determined contributions) so it is up to the nations to hold themselves responsible for meeting the NDCs. The closest thing to enforcement would be to name the country who is slacking in order to bring shame upon them. If the United States refuses the implement the plan set forth by the Paris Accord it will be a major loss in the fight against climate change because they are one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gasses. Furthermore, it will disincentives other countries to implement NDCs because all their efforts will be negated by the United States either way. Lastly, not only will they be setting a bad example but they will also not be helping the underdeveloped nations combat climate change.

  17. The Paris Accord has a great significance because it is the world’s first international climate agreement. It’s goal is to decrease global temperature and strive toward less greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Each country in the agreement is expected to do its part in decreasing the emissions and enforcing the laws which help do so. However, there is no formal responsibility or law requiring each country to follow the agreement, thus raising a possible liability if a country decides not to. If the U.S. were to denounce the agreement, the repercussions would be felt. Since the goal of the Accord is to limit the greenhouse gas emissions, it would be a difficult task to achieve if the U.S. did not participate since they are one of the largest contributors to these emissions. If the U.S. were to agree, their influence on other countries around the world could strengthen the Accord and help stop global warming.

  18. The 2016 Paris Accord agreement is extremely significant because it is the first step towards preventing the climate change and global warming that is occurring in our world. The main goal of this agreement is to keep the warming under 2 degrees Celsius. This will happen if there is an "extraction of CO2 from our air." This International Paris Accord is enforced only if the countries contributing to the agreement tracks the development of having a better environment. If the United States does not implement the plan, it would not be beneficial to our atmosphere at all. The U.S. plays a major role when it comes to contributing to pollution into our atmosphere, so if we don't take a stance in this agreement then a lot of the other countries will not be happy with us at all. In order for this plan to work, all countries should be on board to making this change.

  20. the 2016 Paris Accord agreement is a huge step forward for fixing human-led climate change. The agreement is to keep more CO2 from going into the air and keeping the global warming under 2 degrees (Celcius). Even though many countries signed the agreement, the enforcement aspect is weak. If countries decide to back out and not participate in the Paris Accord then the environment will be hurt but there is no dire consequence to that country alone. However, if the United States refuses to implement the Paris Accord, it has a much larger impact. USA and China are the two largest CO2 contributors and it is not really close. With the amount we put CO2 into the atmosphere, if we back out the world will struggle to recover.

  21. The significance of the 2016 Paris Accord is that the agreement brings all nations into a common cause of taking efforts to combat climate change while supporting to assist developing countries to do so as well. The agreement aims to create and strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change and strengthens countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The International Paris Accord can be enforced in many ways such as taking on new financial flows, a new technology framework. Also the agreement requires that all participating parties put forth their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) which includes requirements such as reporting regularly their emissions and on their implementation efforts. If the United States refuses to implement the plan set forth by the Paris Accord, the global consequences are that other countries will begin to refuse to take part in the plan which will cause a domino effect where more larger powers will be apathetic towards climate change, thus progressing towards no change and smaller countries would be suffering the impacts of climate change including the larger powers as well.

  22. 168 nations have signed on the Paris Agreement to help better our environment on a global scale by seeking out a low carbon economy. The Paris Agreement became official in 2016 after a failed attempt in 2009. Each country that signed was able to create a customized goal and regulations best fitted to their nation. All nations working towards a greater goal of low carbon emissions and utilizing technology to find suitable alternatives. Another key component of the Paris Agreement is an emphasize on the importance of ecosystems, biodiversity and land conservation and how these factors will greatly help the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help lower the negatives changes and impacts climate change and mankind has had on nature. Since each country involved is inwardly run by making their own plans and regulations having a nation like the United States withstand from the Paris Agreement the validity of the act would deteriorate. Larger, more powerful nations are needed to lead by example as well as utilize their greater access to funds in order to explore more energy efficient alternatives to carbon.

  23. The 2016 Paris Accord was established by the United Nations in an effort to reduce carbon emissions throughout the world. However, while it is a reasonable plan, it does lack an enforcement mechanism. In other words, it states rules for countries to follow, but does not have any way to ensure countries are following them. If the United States does not follow the regulations set by the Paris Accord, it is very possible that many of the other countries will also back out of implementing the regulations. The reasoning behind this is that the US often acts as a sort of leader in many situations, as it is one of the bunch of powerhouse countries in the world. Thus, if the US is to ignore the regulations, other countries may also see it as acceptable

  24. The significance of the 2016 Paris accord is that it is the first time that all of the nations have come together and not argued over wether or not climate change is real, or what is the cause of it but instead have decided it is time for change. In order for the plan to be enforced, it must be overseen by the states, or regions themselves. There is no way any one group can monitor all of this, so instead it lies in the hands of the individual for this one. If the U.S. does not implement this plan it will have humongous global factors. First is that the U.S. is one of the main contributors of greenhouse gasses in the world. So the issue there lies in the fact that how much will it even help if all of the smaller countries are trying to decrease green house gasses when they aren't the main violators. Therefore why should they even try to fight climate change, and therefore if the U.S. doesn't follow it will cause other countries to pull out as well.

  25. The Paris Accord is a worldwide effort, led by the United Nations, to limit the effects of climate change within the next century. The main objective is to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius. Along with this, the 197 countries involved are expected to collaborate on technological advances and aid for developing countries. The agreement is not technically a legally binding contract. However, many countries who signed it have set individual goals for their country to reduce emissions. It is believed that these personalized goals will be effective in holding countries accountable. The US is going to be closely watched after signing this agreement. We are one of the biggest polluters so countries will expect us to step up and cut down this pollution. If the US chooses not to respect the Paris Accord, many other countries will disregard the agreement as well.

  26. The Paris Accord is the first ever world-wide legal contract where countries are actually held liable for their greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of the accord is to halt the rising temperatures of the Earth by collaborating on technological advances, aid for developing countries, and reduce emissions within their own nations. The accords will be enforced by the United Nations, who can level sanctions on nations who do not comply with the accord. While that is unlikely, it is one way the UN can keep the 197 nations who signed the Paris Accord in check. If the United States were to pull out of the deal, many other industrialized countries who would lose some money because of the deal may pull out as well. The United States has been historically flaky on these environmental deals, and with Donald Trump in office, it is more than likely the US will pull out of the Paris Accord.
