Please explain the main reason why James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey in the film, Chasing Ice

Then respond to the following question:

Do you believe his findings will have a significant impact on climate change skeptics?

If your answer is no, what will it take to convince these skeptics that climate change is real?

If your answer is yes, will it be enough to convince climate change skeptics in Congress to support greenhouse gas regulation bills?

  1. James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey to help show the effects of climate change. There are many skeptics of climate change, which is mainly attributed to the fact that people can't see climate change, only the data. Balog attempts to capture the effects of climate change with photos to show the world its effects. I believe that his findings will have a significant impact on skeptics because they will be able to directly see the effects of climate change. I'm not sure how effective it will be in Congress because many politicians are motivated by money and interests in denying climate change.

  2. The Extreme Ice Survey was to show climate change through pictures of ice formations over a three year period. I do believe that this film will impact climate change skeptics. Maybe not significantly, since they seem to not believe data that has already been proven, but hopefully it will open their eyes to real world change. As we saw in Mr. Sartore's presentation, images resonate with people more than data and that is exactly what the Extreme Ice Survey is doing. I believe that it will unfortunately take more evidence than this to convince Congress. Although this is an issue on many people's minds at the moment I do not believe it is on the forefront of theirs.

  3. The main reason why James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey in the film, Chasing Ice to show the effects of climate change through pictures taken of disappearing ice over a three year span. I believe his movie and his research on ice formations will have a significant impact on the on climate change skeptics because he proves that there are such drastic changes of ice disappearing and flooding into the oceans in just three years. His pictures depict a powerful message to those living on Earth that we are in a crisis of glaciers melting which adds more water in the oceans, causing the sea level to rise which will threaten coastlines and buildings and cities located along them. Rising sea levels will also erode beaches away and damage wetlands. This will give concern to environmental scientists and tourist agencies. However, skeptics in Congress will always need more evidence to be proven wrong. Balog’s movie is a great way to grab their attention, but it will take slightly more to fully support greenhouse gas regulation bills. His movie is the first step to impact skeptics in Congress because they will see the effects of climate change upfront and direct, realizing how much change can take place in three years.

  4. James Balog's main reason in creating the Extreme Ice Survey was to show how the different regions and areas climate changes over time. However, he used the EIS to capture these changes through photography. By using photography, Balog felt that he would be able to reach more of the public through the unbelievable visual evidence. Although Balog wanted to change the mind of many people, I do not believe that his photography will change the mind of the strong skeptics against global warming. The sad part is, if someone truly does not believe in global warming, I do not think there is much that will change their mind. Photography and scientific evidence will help but in order for a skeptic to change their mind I think there will have to be a consensus in the government and in the scientific community on the topic of global warming. The elites of these groups will need to prove and acknowledge the issues in the environment before a strong skeptic will change their mind.

  5. James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey to show the public the tangible effects of climate change that the Earth is experiencing right now. He showed pictures of several different icebergs from all over the world over the span of a few years. In all the pictures, viewers could see how rapidly and drastically the icebergs had melted. While I’m sure that some people who don’t believe the climate change is real at all could be convinced by the pictures, I don’t think those who don’t believe humans are causing global warming will be impacted. Until something happens to them directly, it will be hard to convince them. There have been massive natural disasters happening more frequently than ever before in human history that we know of, yet there are still climate change deniers. Until it’s their homes and families that are suffering, they evidently will continue to ignore the evidence that has always been right there for them to see.

  6. The main reason James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey in the film, Chasing Ice is because he is attempting to inform the general public that the affects of climate change are extremely real. James Balog essentially made it his life mission to show the public how drastically the Earth is changing. Balog is extremely passionate about this project because he believes that by informing the public about the severe consequences of climate change, he will be able to motivate people into creating new methods that won’t damage the environment. Therefore, I believe his findings will be able to have a significant impact on climate change skeptics because his photos are extremely convincing. Additionally because Balog chose to do this through the medium of photography I believe enough people will be impacted by his photos, and feel obligated to pressure Congress to support the greenhouse gas regulation bills.

  7. The main reason he created the film, Chasing Ice, was too draw attention towards the physical evidence of climate change and global warming throughout the world. His journeys and photographs taken of the glaciers capture the yearly depleting of the ice from its origin. I believe that his findings are used as prominent data and physical proof that will convince skeptical people that there is a real threat to the environment. Most people who choose not to believe global warming are relying on data that fluctuates from high and low temperatures, making it hard for them to believe that the earth is gradually warming. Although it seems blatantly obvious to most that climate change is occurring, I do not believe it is enough to have Congress pass the greenhouse gas regulation bill. I believe that although there is physical proof of climate change, there still remains a high percentage of people who use data and have other beliefs, such as religion, that they use to disprove the theory. Even though James Balog went out of his way to support the movement and prove to the world that our environment is in danger, it will take many more years and much more evidence to prove climate change.

  8. Chasing Ice was made in an effort to show physical evidence of global warming. James Balog, an outdoorsman, was looking for a way to show that climate change was real and to be able to prove it to the people. Because seeing something is the best way to believe in it, he set up cameras to continuously take picture over the course of three years, and when played in a fast cap you can watch the glaciers melt and shrink at a very fast rate. The importance of the video is more so that you don't need any scientific background to know that climate change is real and happening. Its right there for you to see. With that said i do think that this video has the capacity to change peoples mind and really believe in climate change but i do not think it will get any bills on greenhouse gasses passed. The video shows no correlation, or any real cause as to why it is getting warmer, just that it is happening, you cannot draw any conclusions as to how or why from this video

  9. James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey to show the effect of climate change on the world’s ice. A majority of climate change skeptics cite the idea that people cannot see climate change so therefore it cannot be happening. The data is too difficult for some to understand and some people need a visual. I believe that his findings will have a significant impact on climate change skeptics because it is very difficult to argue photographic evidence. If people are able to see the effects, then they will be more likely to act. However, it might not influence Congress because their opinions are driven by corporate money. The movie will not lead to a revolution in Congress but it could make people begin to think about climate change more and potentially change their opinions.

  10. The Extreme Ice Survey was created by James Balog to visually demonstrate the effects of climate change, particularly on the ice caps. By taking photos so consistently and so often gave Balog the photographic evidence of global warming. Many people do not believe in global warming because there is no apparent evidence that they see as well as the data can be difficult to understand and follow if you are not a scientist. By doing this project it provided the photographic evidence and representation needed to show people of how drastic the effects of global warming are and that it is happening at an alarming rate. The Extreme Ice Survey is so powerful and factual that it has the potential to cause real change by increasing the publics awareness and concern for global warming. As with Silent Spring, a lot of positive change can stem from the general public. This in turn causes the government to take action. Just as what happened with DDT hopefully the public and government will now acknowledge global warming as fact and step up to cause a positive change.

  11. James Balog used the Extreme Ice Survey as a tool to show people what climate change is doing to our glaciers. The reason people didn't believe in climate change is because they were only reading the data and not actually seeing the effects. The Extreme Ice Survey gives the public all the information they need to finally come to an agreement on climate. Its happening and something needs to change or our earth will destroyed. If all the people come together and elect congressmen who believe in climate change then that is a step in the right direction. A congressmen who does believe in climate would most likely change his position in climate change because the evidence presented by James Balog is undisputed. If they don't change their postion they most likely not be re-elected by the citizens of the United States.

  12. The main reason why James Bolag created the Extreme Ice Survey in the film, Chasing Ice is to show visually the effects of climate change. He believes that having visual proof compared to data will have a significantly bigger impact on climate change skeptics and everyone in general. He chose a time lapse of icebergs because they are one of the most noticeable things affected by the increase in temperature. Furthermore, melting icebergs will have a big impact on society because it will increase global sea levels to wear coastal communities and islands could be submerged if this trend continues. It will have some impact on climate change skeptics but not enough for a drastic movement. What would convince these skeptics is forcing them to move to an island where the rising sea levels will submerge the island rather soon. Forcing them to be on the front lines and experiencing firsthand the effects of climate should be enough to convince them.

  13. The main reason James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey was to document how the ice is changing around the world and what that means in terms of climate change. His documentary Chasing Ice shows the progression of his project from an idea he spontaneously got to a project that leads the field in ice video and pictures. I believe this is enough to convince climate change skeptics but the leading lobbyists against climate change are not necessarily skeptics but the large corporations that damage the environment. This means that congressmen are not necessarily skeptics but to convince them to pass legislation protecting the environment might still be too difficult if they are being promised money and re-election help.

  14. James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey to find visual evidence of shrinking glaciers around the world. Balog had a passion for climate change and wanted to develop solid evidence to help show the world what is truly happening to our earth. I believe his evidence will be compelling enough to change many skeptics minds including government officials. More often then not, skeptics will argue that scientific research on climate change can be skewed and altered. People are often hesitant to trust science and numbers. However, Balog shows us indisputable visual evidence. It is very powerful to actually see something happen as opposed to being told it is happening. Research like his has already had an impact in the political realm. Last year, many world leaders met in France to discuss climate change and how to reduce the human carbon footprint. As more evidence of climate change develops, we should expect to see more people support greenhouse gas reduction.

  15. James Balog’s extreme ice survey was created to show the stunning visual effects that melting glaciers have had on the environment. He saw evidence of the climate changing through his work in photography, and wanted to create an archive of photographic evidence that proves that climate change and the melting of the ice caps exists. However, I do not believe that it will change the opinions of many climate skeptics. People who are on extreme sides of an issue often tend to ignore evidence that proves or disproves what they believe. Instead, they gather evidence on their side whether it is correct or falsified, and use that evidence to further there point. I believe that in order for climate change skeptics to be convinced that climate change is real, it will take time and a preponderance of evidence and education over a long period of time. People’s perceptions are not easily changed, but eventually with time, a large societal change can happen.

  16. James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey was created to give people a visual depiction of the planet's changing ecosystem and to inspire young people to take action. I think that the movie was very persuasive in demonstrating that there is a problem with our current environment; however, I don't believe it will change the opinion of some climate change skeptics. I think that people would try to rationalize what occured in the movie to fit with their own personal beliefs. Also, the movie showed glaciers melting, which some people will try to aquent with natural causes and changes the earth naturally goes through. I am not sure how exactly to change people's minds without information that can definitively, hundred percent, link climate change with human actions.

  17. The overall goal of Chasing Ice was to demonstrate the melting glaciers all over the Arctic. I believe that James Balog wanted the people to see what has been occurring in our environment and he wanted to show them that our climate was actually changing and natural disasters were resulting. Balog wanted people to understand the damages that global warming was causing because it is ruining our planet. He does a good job at portraying the damages of global warming through his pictures and his videos. Just looking at the video really made me consider if I was helping the planet enough. If everyone saw this movie, they will also want to help our planet because it is our home and it is where we live. We don't want to destroy it.

  18. James Balog's goal by conducting the extreme ice survey was to to visually depict the changes occurring within our environment in the hope to sway some skeptics of climate change. I think his work was successful enough to change the minds of some people who denounce climate change, however I do not think it was enough to spark a significant change. Even with an easy visual on the negative effects of climate change, there will still be a significant number of close-minded people who will not acknowledge the phenomena. All that can be done is just an increasing effort to make people more aware of climate change through the media and other outlets to engage people.

  20. James Balog's main reason in making Chasing Ice was to document his experience in showing people images of Climate Change. He felt that people do not relate well to statistics so capturing images will allow people to get a better understanding of what is going on in the world. His findings will most definitely have an impact on skeptics because of the power of a visual image. Will it be enough to sway the voters in congress? this is a question i dont really know how to answer. The evidence is there but it is up to the person to get the deed done. There are a whole lot of instances where we have enough evidence and this is one of them. It is up to the person to let go of their bias for the better good of everyone.

  21. James Balog created the Extreme Ice Survey to give people a visual reference to the issue. He felt that too much was being said about the "intangible" effects of climate change, and giving people a visual reference like watching massive pieces of glacier break off and fall into the sea will have a massive impact on people. The Extreme Ice Survey produced some breathtaking and terrifying visuals. I hope that this will have the desired impact and raise some awareness about the issue of climate change. I think that those who are skeptical about climate change will have a much more difficult time defending their position with this visual reference to the destruction of our environment. While I do believe these visuals will have an impact on politicians in our system, they are bought out by lobbyists, and will vote where the money is not where the evidence is.

  22. James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey plan is one that has done something unheard of. What I have noted from pure observation is that people lack a sense of urgency in issues regarding climate change, even while acknowledging it is existence and detrimental. This lack of urgency stems more directly from misinformation, but more importantly, neglect. We tend to neglect issues that don't directly impact us because we don't directly feel the injuries caused by climate change. People only react urgently to occurrences when a solution is very close to being unattainable due to its damaging. If the injuries of climate change were more direct, and inevitable, every single person would be out of their seat and in the front line of the fight against it. What James Balog did was take the blinds off of even some of the most renounced and intellectually capable scientists in order to showcase how real and impactful climate change actually is. Unless we can physically feel or calculate danger, people do not respond. Balog calculated danger by measuring how much large masses of ice melt overtime due to the earth's atmospheric temperature increase. These breathtaking images personalized the issues of climate change, so much so that it sparked nation-wide recognition and emotional reaction. EIC forced urgency down everyone's throat and showcased what many thought to be so opaque, it felt unreal. I think it would most definitely spark something within climate change skeptics, but is not enough to insight political change. Politics is so rigid that it has limited itself to specific scientific research form. It is easy for them to claim that his work is not enough evidence to imply environmental destruction and the unbecoming of the weather as we know it. The visuals may persuade some, but many politicians are too misinformed to draw the direct correlation between climate change and melting ice. The representation of this would require a scientist to spell it out for them and tell them how this could hurt us in the long run because images of melting ice relates very little to their own lives. Politicians tend to advocate for things in accordance to their own interest, therefore it must be related back to them in order to be effective in its entirety.
